The Denver Broncos placed the linebacker on injured reserve on Wednesday, and he’ll spend the rest of his rookie year there.
Allen suffered a broken foot in Alabama’s season-opening 44-13 victory over Miami (Fla.) on Sept. 4.
The Broncos signed Allen as a rookie free agent after he went unselected in the 2022 NFL Draft. Allen made limited appearances in Denver’s offseason practices and had begun training camp on the non-football injury list.
At Alabama, Allen took a redshirt season in 2018 because of a knee injury, and he’ll get the NFL version of that procedure in 2022 in hopes of putting a Lisfranc injury behind him.
To get Allen to sign after the draft, the Broncos provided a $30,000 signing bonus and guaranteed $150,000 of his 2022 contract. Allen will receive a $430,000 salary on injured reserve, Mike Klis of KUSA-TV reported.
Another player with Alabama football roots lost his active roster spot on Wednesday, too. But for former Gadsden City High School standout Jordan Veasy, it meant he was off the team after the Las Vegas Raiders waived the wide receiver.
Veasy had two receptions for 16 yards in the Raiders’ 27-11 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Hall of Fame Game on Thursday night.
Since entering the NFL as an undrafted rookie in 2018, Veasy had been on the rosters of the Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo Bills, Washington Football Team and Houston Texans before joining Las Vegas on May 20.
Veasy has played in two NFL regular-season games, getting on the field for 24 offensive snaps and 26 special-teams plays for the Texans in 2021.
